Auckland is located
on the North Island of New Zealand. It is also known as Greater
Auckland or Auckland Metropolitan Area and it is the largest
urban area in New Zealand. Auckland has an area of 1.086 square
km. It has population of over 1.2 million which is almost one
third of the whole population of New Zealand. Auckland is
located between Hauraki Gulf, the low Hunua Ranges, the Manukau
Harbour and the Waitakere Ranges. Auckland makes part of some
few cities in the world having harbours on two separate bodies
of water. Maori call Auckland “Tamaki Makau Rau”. Maoris were
the first to settle there at around 1350. The main tribes living
in this part were the “Ngati Whatua” and “Tainui”. |
